Roger Ross Williams, 2010

Prudence Mabhena shines in this Oscar-winning story about the Zimbabwe band Liyana. Born with arthogryposis, a disorder that severely deforms the joints, Prudence grew up under the stigma and superstition assigned to those with disabilities in Zimbabwe. Through the love of her grandmother and a teacher who encouraged her to join a choir, Prudence discovered her voice and founded the Afro-fusion band Liyana with a group of other disabled musicians. Their passion for music carries them—and us—forward in this story of courage and hope.
