Amanda Kernell, 2016

In this lyrical and psychologically-complex drama, a 14-year-old Sámi girl is subjected to racism and eugenic scrutiny in the 1930s when she is removed from her family and sent to a state-run school that aims to reeducate her into Swedish culture. Newcomer Lene Cecilia Sparrok brilliantly portrays the fierce independence, rage, and desire of a young indigenous woman determined to make her own way in the world while struggling with its extraordinarily high cost.

Screens with Ogichidaa.

A panel discussion/Q&A with Jerry Jondreau and Finlandia University's Jim Kurtti, Dr. Hilary Virtanen, and Joanne Chopp, follows the screening of these films.
